Farmhouse Biscuits & Gravy
What a sweet way to profess your love! “Cooking is love made edible”.
Biscuits and gravy are quite possibly the best comfort food. It’s not only filling but a quick cheap meal to feed your family.
They’re perfect for breakfast and at any time of the day!
Jamie’s Fluffy Biscuits:
2 cups flour
4 tsp. Baking powder
3 tsp. Sugar
1/2 tsp. salt
1/2 c. shortening
1 Farm Fresh Egg
2/3 c. Farm Fresh Milk
In a bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, sugar and salt. Cut in shortening until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. In a small bowl, beat eggs and milk; stir into dry ingredients just until moistened.
Turn onto a well-floured surface; knead 20 times. Roll to 3/4 in. thickness; cut with a biscuit cutter. Place on lightly greased baking sheet. Bake at 450 degrees for 10-15 minutes or until golden brown. Yield: 1 dozen. (For our large family we definitely double this recipe.)
How to make gravy...
I don't have a recipe for gravy. I just dump everything in and make it, but I will explain to you what I do.
First, I brown a package of sausage in a skillet. When it is no longer pink, I remove the meat from the skillet.
While on medium heat, I add a stick of butter to the skillet to melt. After the butter is melted, I pour in our fresh Jersey milk. Be sure to add the cream. The cream will not only add lots of flavor, but your gravy will thicken quicker. Quickly, before the milk heats up, add 1/2 cup of flour and whisk to remove all lumps. Keep whisking until gravy becomes thick. Add your sausage and sprinkle in some salt and pepper.
Pour the gravy over a biscuit or two and enjoy this comfort food.
This is a fast meal that your family can enjoy for breakfast or even for supper. If you've never made homemade biscuits and gravy, don't be afraid to try it. It really is fairly simple to make and your family will love it.
Cooking for the ones I love,
Jamie
P.S. Our cream-line milk from our farm, not only adds flavor to your gravy, but makes it extremely easy to make gravy. The unprocessed milk will thicken much faster than the milk you buy from the store. Learn more here about our dairy herd share program.
